Please please read this (preferably in one sitting) September 2, 2010 "Eirlys" I initially avoided reading this book as I didn't think it looked like it would be a very engaging story. I usually like my fiction to be a bit more far removed from reality than the channel islands! I bought this book on a Saturday morning and finished it by Sunday lunch time at a leisurely pace and couldn't have enjoyed it more! It is comprised of lots of short letters between numerous characters in the book, which makes for very easy reading (no large chapters to plough through). The inhabitants of the island are hilarious and engaging and you will without a doubt come to know and love their quirks by the final page. If you are looking for a fast paced thriller then this is not the read for you, however, if you feel like having a "comfy" and pleasant book to snuggle up to for the weekend this is definitely the right choice. 5 stars from me!
Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society September 2, 2010 nicegranny Loved this - a light, easy to read, novel which imparts a lot of information through diverse, and interesting, characters. Without exception, the members of our Book Club (who usually disagree - sometimes very vociferously)really enjoyed this book. It made a change from tales of miserable Irish childhoods which leave one feeling almost suicidal! Even tho' the experiences of the characters were harsh and the outcomes not always kind, the light touch of the author ensures an enjoyable, and educational, read. Highly recommended.
charming book August 30, 2010 louisa This charming book gradual draws you into its many encompassing short entwining stories with a main thread which is both sad and witty with, of course, a happy ending.I really enjoyed this and would never have picked it up from the bookshelf unless encouraged by my book group--comes highly recommended.
Disappointing and rather monotone August 28, 2010 Brolyn (CREWE, Cheshire United Kingdom) I feel bad criticising a book whose author died shortly after completing it but I agree with all the comments made by those who wrote the 1 and 2 star reviews. The irony is that I think the author herself partly knew the reasons why the book couldn't work. Sidney, the publisher, tells Juliet that a collection of anecdotes wouldn't do for a book. Well, basically I think this is what we have here, and not very coherent or fluid anecdotes at that. Many have commented on the similar tone of voice of the characters; I imagined them all speaking with a sort of Cornish accent! Other epistolary books have worked well for me, e.g. 'e', 'Salmon Fishing in the Yemen' and of course '84, Charing Cross Road'. Sadly, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society did not work for me. The other distraction was the dates on the letters-the postal system must have exceeded email in its speed and the characters must have spent most of their time writing! Having said that-perhaps there is a novel here, told by one person, from Guernsey.
A Must Read novel August 24, 2010 veronicap (England) This is such an uplifting and heartening book. I have purchased it for several friends and each one has passed it on to numerous contacts. It can't fail to cheer!
